Hearing
loss refers to reduced hearing. It can be caused due to many reasons-damage in
the ear drum, infections in the middle ear, formation of ear wax,
ageing, meningitis, exposure to loud noise etc. There are actually two kinds of
hearing loss-conductive and sensorineural.
The
first one is caused because of malfunctions or obstructions in the middle or
outer ear and the latter one is caused due to damage in the hair cells of inner
ear.
Hearing
loss is not same as deafness. It is basically gradual. In fact, it is so
gradual that the individual who is experiencing it does not even realize that
it is happening. It can lead to loneliness, isolation, fewer education and
job opportunities, emotional problems as well as difficulties in
communication. Here I have discussed about three ways in which
this problem does affect our life.
(01) Difficulty
in maintaining relationships
To
maintain a good and healthy relationship, we need to keep in touch with one
another and communicate well. But if a person is having audibility problems,
communication becomes a bit troublesome affair. Not only does the person who is
suffering from the problem experiences difficulty in communicating but also the
person with whom the sufferer is trying to communicate. Spouse, children,
friends, business associates and extended family members will find difficulty
in communicating with the person when they will realize that he or she is
unable to understand what they are saying. Eventually, some day will come when
you will be socially withdrawn because of reduced access to services and
difficulties communicating with others. However, you can avoid this
situation and enhance your living by wearing a hearing aid.
(02) Depression and
moodiness
Depression and
moodiness are often seen in person who experience hearing loss. A few years
before a study in Australia was conducted where it was found that people
who experience mild to moderate audibility problems are more prone to
anxiety, depression and interpersonal sensitivity than people who
have no problems in haring loss. Moreover, it was also found out that as
symptoms elevate people who don't treat the problem start suffering more from
severe depression.
(03) Drop
in self-confidence and esteem
Hearing
loss affects the self-esteem and self-confidence of a person. For
instance, if a person is working in an office and he or she happens to have
this problem, he or she will not be able to communicate properly. When the
person will realize this that he or she is having problem interacting with
others in office, the self-confidence and esteem of the person will highly be
affected. This will ultimately cause the person to withdraw him or herself and
to give up facing public situations.
All
these situations can be very depressing and cause social withdrawal. So, to
avoid this situation from happening, book an appointment with an audiologist of SURYADEEP HOSPITAL
GURGOAN.
